Over-The-Top Costumes

Ellen Mirojnick says she tackled this project the way she always does with historical work: first by looking at the period she’s working in, then amplifying it. The result is a funkier, louder, wilder version of the 1800s.

Living The Korean Dream

Costume Designer Susanna Song’s commitment to the project was as personal as it was professional. “There isn’t another Korean American film about the American Dream. This is its first kind."

Celebrating Blackness

Because of the limitations of Queen and Slim’s situation, each costume choice has to communicate a lot about the characters. For Queen, a tiger print minidress alludes to her own sense of empowerment as she ventures deeper into their wild ride. And for Slim, a Sean John-inspired tracksuit reflects his own need for comfort, namely from the people and places he surrounds himself with.

Paolo Nieddu’s First-Period Film

“I focused on creating Billie’s world—which is itself an artistic vision.” Nieddu combed through thousands of historical photos to build a timeline of Holiday’s life, marking breakthroughs, low points, and all facets between.

A Long-Standing American Ideal

Pay Equity in costume design translates to being paid the same as other heads of departments such as the art department, production designer, and cinematographer.

We celebrate the spirit of collaboration

Star Power: Ruth E. Carter

The Costume Designers Guild sends its heartfelt congratulations to Ruth E. Carter for receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Carter is one of only two costume designers to receive this momentous honor, 61 years after the first was awarded to the legendary Edith Head.

Daniel Craig's Wardrobe

Larlarb folded the aspirational nature of the Bond franchise into her thinking for the costumes. “You’re traveling the globe, so you need to introduce people to and pay homage to a slice of life, and Bond himself must fit in easily. Everyone aspires to be him in the film.”

Spotlight: Francine Dressed 4 Iconic American Figures

If the actor is wearing something that has meaning, the performance flows with even more authenticity.
